Actress Dakota Johnson, commonly known from the 2015 film Fifty Shades of Grey, is also known notable for her amazing sense in fashion. In this post, we will look back at some of her most iconic outfits and study her style. Although Johnson styles lots of basics, the way that she deftly mixes colours and fabrics is the way she creates compelling outfits, rather than fashinong more lavish clothing pieces thrown together. Let’s take a look at some examples:
Here she is seen wearing a black knit sweater, layered with a grey tank top. Her jeans are a mid light blue, paired with light blue samba’s. Her navy hat and brown cat eye sunglasses are the perfect accessories. It is the way that her sweater is tucked in at the front and how the shoes compliment the pants. Her style is not dominant or overpowering, rather calming and put together well. Her look emphasizes the simplicity of a good outfit and a wardrobe with various basics.
However, Johnson also knows how to be chic and still stand out. Her outfit for the Telluride Film Festival was breathtaking. It complimented her beautifully. Where bright colours and prominent clothing pieces tend to quickly overpower her, softer and more classic styles tend to compliment her and make her stand out.
In this picture she is seen wearing a classic knit jumpsuit. The jumpsuit brings back a softer side of the classic, artistic/hippie outfit that feels like something you’ve Stevie Nicks wearing. Johnson has paired it skilfully with a bandeau jumpsuit underneath— modest and also sultry in a admirably cohesive way. She also puts the popular “sandwich method” to use in this outfit in that her shoes match her bag. The entire look works together and, more importantly, highlights her rather than overpowering her.
Let’s turn to look at a more modern outfit on her—which I don’t think is as flattering as the previous ones have been. You will notice that clothing pieces that are more bold, connecting to current fashion trends in maximalism. These tend to look very different on Johnson in comparison with her more frequently worn, chic and timeless outfits.
The concern with this look on Johnson is principally that pattern overwhelmed her, and consequently, the eye is hooked to the pattern of the blazer and pants rather than taking in the entire look, her included. In the other outfits she is wearing the clothes, here, it looks like the clothes are wearing her. This might be more in line with current styles, but her own style is splendid and suits her much better for the reason of it being authentic and curated to herself.
If you are a fellow admirer of Johnson’s style, here are some sustainably sourced pieces that might suit your taste.
Note from the Editor: The true benefits of sustainable clothing are quality and timelessness—the importance of these two aspects prevail the heftier price points invariably. Fast fashion renders style as something disposable, which is something it should never be. Clothes are for cherishing.
