“You can’t love summer, and love fashion.” A statement I keep hearing over and over every time we approach the season, but why is that? Is it because people feel like there is less room for creativity in their outfits, or because the missing factor of layering makes it harder to achieve the desired look? Then again, when you look at other cultures, it is hard to believe the notion that style only unfolds through the layers of fall/winter.
I say we learn from those who have acclimated to it ages ago and ask the question: how do other cultures epitomize warm-weather clothing? That’s why it feels only right to turn to the masters of summer dressing: the people of the Mediterranean.
Curation is not meant to feel overstated or out-of-place. I find that when people are able to express their identities and experiences using their style as a medium, that, in turn, breeds this sort of authenticity that cannot be replicated. It is in the simplicity of attaching a charm that has been picked up from a random local flea market to an everyday bag or handmaking a crochet scarf. These are the moments that define Mediterranean style, effortlessly embracing that “dolce far niente” spirit.
I believe it’s the perfect season to play around with color, patterns and fabric, and remarkably so, they have proven exactly that. Every piece is carefully thought of, in terms of functionality and overall fit, blending perfectly with the atmosphere.
From the breathable fabrics to warm-toned colorful palettes, mediterraneans manage to cultivate their looks through the heat. Brighter, neutral tones are worn to deflect the UV rays as much as possible, though being of origin seems to come with a sun glow as a signature. And to savor every passing breeze, cooling fabrics like linen are considered wardrobe staples. Not to mention chiffon, handwoven silk, macramé, and lace—all of which prove that lighter fabrics can convey textural depths. Prints are everywhere. Capturing the hues of the coastal landscapes so intricately, an embroidered shawl with the tassel fringes can elevate an otherwise understated look. Colors, usually striking, yet harmonize beautifully all together.
Often times they opt for minimal layering rather than bare skin. Even in an all-white ensemble, they would incorporate a stack of bangles or dramatic earrings. A pendant necklace could be just the right subtle accent to a flowy look, but beyond style, it carries the weight of something personal, disguised as an ornament.
Their way of living through the season is reflected in the sensory richness of their clothing. The versatility in their clothing is what can spark a shift in the narrative that dismisses summer fashion so easily, pushing away from seasonal bias. Comfort, practicality, and character; mix them up, and voila, you’ve got your recipe. That’s really all you need for summer.
There’s beauty in their adaptation to their roots. They dress for themselves rather than seeking out mainstream influences that never quite fit -which is why it feels like everything’s made for them.
The culture is the story, and the garment is the dialogue.
Their unique experiences define their looks, but also traditions solidify them. To understand how to dress in a way that’s meant for you and allows for genuine expression; that’s the secret. You don’t have to be loud to make a statement, just embrace the essentials, more so, what you deem yours. Style is always there-it’s not seasonal. And in summer, it reveals itself only to those who dare to embrace it.
